District heating

district heating The UK’s power stations generate enough heat each year to meet the needs of every home in the country… and then we throw the heat away. District heating (heating buildings via hot water in super-insulated pipes) allows heat from electricity generation or other sources to be used instead of lost.

Fontenergy provides the hardware and know-how needed to make district heating work. This includes heat metering systems, district heating pipes, hydraulic interface units (HIUS) within dwellings, design services, and construction management.

Modern district heating is relatively new in the UK. So, we work with partners inside one of Denmark’s oldest and best respected district heating consultancies. Denmark installed district heating systems across the country in the 1970s. Today, 95% of Copenhagen and about two thirds of the country as a whole is on district heating. Through our strategic partners we have access to the expertise of people who have been part of the world’s most successful district heating projects for over 30 years.

The heat network is often the single most expensive mechanical item for new build schemes. We therefore ensure that the design will maximise the life of the asset, and manage construction to ensure proper installation. Customers also rely on us to take care of maintenance – we can either put a maintenance regime in place, or provide maintenance services through our joint venture Insite Energy.
